How the rebate process works

CleanBC Better Homes is B.C.’s online hub for homeowners to access information, rebates and support to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in new and existing homes.

This overview will help you understand the steps involved in your home renovation or new home construction project.

Step 1: Decide which energy upgrades to make

Take some time to consider what your primary renovation goals are. Knowing your priorities helps you make better decisions with your time and budget.

Learn about various upgrades that will make your home more comfortable and energy efficient.  Here’s some information to help you get started.

This could include space heating systems, water heating systems, insulation, windows, doors, draftproofing and ventilation. Find out how these complement each other by learning about the House-as-a-System approach.

Step 2: Explore the different rebate programs

Read about each of the wider rebate programs to understand if you qualify to participate in them. Contact an Energy Coach if you have questions or need help.

British Columbians with eligible homes who are looking to improve energy efficiency through select upgrades. Applications are accepted after all work has been completed and final invoices have been paid.  Learn more about the Better Homes and Home Renovation Rebate Program.

B.C. homeowners with eligible homes where the total household income is within an established threshold. You must pre-register for this program before renovations begin. Learn more about the Energy Savings Program.

Please note: The Canada Greener Homes Grant has closed the intake of new applicants.

Homeowners who have already completed their online registration and have an application number are encouraged to proceed in a timely manner with their retrofits and will continue to be eligible for funding and support through the Canada Greener Homes portal.

Step 3: Find and review specific rebates

Each rebate has specific requirements that must be met in order for you to qualify for that rebate. Some rebates have more requirements than others. Start by reading the following information.

Explore different rebate programs for an overview.  Make sure you review the individual rebate pages for complete details on what’s available and how to access the offers.

Some rebate programs must be accessed separately from each other.  Ask an Energy Coach for support understanding which programs can be accessed alongside which other offers.

Step 4: Work with your contractor

Discuss the rebate(s) you wish to apply for with your contractor. Good communication from the start can result in a successful renovation and a higher chance that the equipment and the installation work will meet eligibility requirements.

Working with a registered contractor means you are working with someone that is trained in industry best practices and is subject to ongoing quality assurance evaluations.  To find a contractor that serves your area, use the Contractor Search Tool.

Documentation is very important to access rebates.  Sample invoices are available for reference.

Step 5: Apply for your rebate

You can apply for CleanBC rebates after you have paid your final invoice for the renovation work. When you’re ready, follow these steps:

  1. Double-check you’ve met the terms and conditions for your specific CleanBC rebate program, as well as all eligibility requirements for your specific rebate(s).
  2. Gather any required documentation.
  3. Find the right rebate application and begin the application process.

Rebates are processed based on the date of the invoice for the upgrade.  You must apply for individual rebates within 6 months of the invoice date.  Bonus and special offers have different deadlines.

It can take up 90 days to process a rebate application.  If you application requires additional information or clarification, it can take longer to process so ensure you have everything you need when you submit an application.

Step 1: Learn about the BC Energy Step Code

The BC Energy Step Code helps guide the construction of new homes and buildings in the province. Since 2017, the energy efficiency requirements for new homes has grown each year; the goal is to have net-zero emission homes being built for 2032. The BC Energy Step Code is an optional compliance path in the BC Building Code that local governments can voluntarily adopt and use to incentivize or require higher levels of energy efficiency in new construction development. The BC Energy Step Code was introduced as a step-by-step building efficiency strategy designed to help meet the Provincial Government’s target of all new homes being net-zero energy ready by 2032.

Step 4: Construct your new home

Work with your team of professionals to complete the construction of your new home. Make sure you’ve collected all the required application documents from your builder as outlined in your rebate’s terms and conditions.

Step 5: Apply for your rebate

You can apply for CleanBC rebates after you have paid your final invoice for the renovation work. When you’re ready, follow these steps:
